Doping Hornets: "Delirium Dive" (2025)

The Canadian band Doping Hornets delivers a progressive/rock album featuring the genre's most potent characteristics: energy, melody, narrative intensity and a dense sonic texture. 

From the outset with "The Flood" (5:25) to the finale with the epic title track, "Delirium Dive" (9:13), the album takes us on a journey that blends urgency, moments of reflection and atmospheres of progressive angst. 

Tracks such as "Dr Pills" and "Massive Anaesthesia" move between hard-hitting riffs, free-tempo developments and passages of moderate tension that hark back to what the most modern progressive music contributes to the seventies' legacy.

What makes Delirium Dive truly valuable is its balance: on the one hand, the sheer power ("Mechanical Slavery", at almost seven minutes, pulls no punches), and on the other, its ability to show restraint and build atmosphere ("Ruins of Mankind", "Into the Void"). This alternation gives the album a dynamic feel and holds the listener's attention.

The production is crisp but not sterile; you can pick out nuances, layers, and contrasts. And while it's not an album that completely revolutionises the genre, it does so with honesty and conviction. Ultimately, Delirium Dive is a serious step for Doping Hornets: without abandoning their roots, they strive for refinement, explore the extended structure and show that there is life beyond the established names. La banda canadiense Doping Hornets entrega un álbum de corte progresivo/rock con los rasgos más potentes del género: energia, melodía, intensidad narrativa y textura sonora densa.

Desde el inicio con “The Flood” (5:25) hasta el final con la épica titular “Delirium Dive” (9:13), el disco nos lleva por caminos que mezclan urgencia, espacios de reflexión y atmósferas de angustia progresiva.

Temas como “Dr Pills” o “Massive Anaesthesia” se deslizan entre riffs contundentes, desarrollos de tempo libre y pasajes de tensión moderada que remiten a lo que el progresivo más moderno aporta al legado de los setenta.

Lo que hace realmente valioso a Delirium Dive es su equilibrio: por un lado, la potencia (“Mechanical Slavery” con casi siete minutos no perdona) por otro, la capacidad de contención y construcción de climas (“Ruins of Mankind”, “Into the Void”). Esa alternancia da al disco dinamismo y sostiene la atención.

La producción suena limpia, pero no estéril: se perciben matices, capas, contrastes. Y aunque no se trata de un disco que revolucione por completo el género, sí lo hace con honestidad y convicción. Para quienes seguimos el progresivo con ganas de que “algo nuevo” mantenga la llama de lo clásico, este trabajo tiene mucho que aportar.

En definitiva, Delirium Dive es un paso serio de Doping Hornets: sin abandonar sus raíces, busca el refinamiento, explora la estructura extensa y muestra que hay vida más allá de los nombres consagrados. Una escucha que merece atención, tanto para fans del género como para quienes les interesa un rock bien pensado.
