Jordsjø "Pastoralia" (2021)

Jordsjø "Pastoralia" (2021)

This is the new installment, the sixth, from this project conceived by two young Norwegian musicians: multi-instrumentalist Håkon Oftung, who also plays in Tusmørke, and drummer Kristian Frøland. Both aim to follow the trail of Scandinavian prog alongside bands like Änglagård, All Traps on Earth, or their countrymen Caligonaut and Wobbler.
The substantial difference from their Nordic peers is that Jordsjø's music is much simpler, lacking complex compositions while still retaining the distinctive Scandinavian trademark: that is to say, a rich abundance of melodies, pastoral passages, folk elements, and in this case, a symphonic backdrop. The songs are sung in Norwegian.
Furthermore, this work benefits from the inclusion of guest musicians playing double bass, bass clarinet, and violin.
The album opens with a short, jazz-tinged prelude/prologue before diving into two tracks, "Skumring i Karesuando" and "Mellom Mjødurt, Marisko og Søstermarihånd," which can already be labeled as Jordsjø's signature sound. It is a style of Anglo-Saxon progressive rock that is much closer to Camel, Genesis, and even Jethro Tull rather than King Crimson, which is the path their Nordic neighbors usually tend to choose.

The title track, "Pastoralia," is truly worthy of its name—a homage to the pastoral style where Håkon Oftung's flute, which is already a prominent feature on the record, takes on a different tone here. Following a short acoustic guitar instrumental, "Beitemark" is a magnificent track that edges closer to their countrymen Wobbler. "Vettedans" is closer to folk territory, a song very similar to "Beitemark" but enriched by double bass, bass clarinet, and violin, and featuring a more intricate composition.
Then comes the longest track, "Jord III," which, while remaining faithful to their signature style, introduces other musical nuances without leaving aside Anglo-Saxon elements and showcasing several keyboard references to Genesis. It is a highly reflective and pastoral piece that builds up in crescendo, yet features very commendable rhythmic shifts that include guitar solos by guest musician Håkon Knutzen, double bass, and a dark finale. It also includes a brief poem/spoken-word piece in Norwegian by guest Ola Mile Bruland.

In short, if you like smooth, straightforward Scandinavian prog—some might even call it a bit bland—but not lacking in great moments, beauty is not synonymous with complexity.
"Pastoralia" is a mandatory listen.
