I had this album floating around between my shelf of forgotten records and my current-listening pile for quite some time, but recently I’ve given it the necessary spins to write a proper review. We are dealing here with the ambitious new project led by Sweden's Peter Lazar focused on the deadly sins, and truth be told, it brings out somewhat contradictory feelings in me, but let’s break it down.
Unlike other experiments that lean towards a generic sound or plain boring clones, here we find much more powerful passages. "Wrath" overflows with great performance energy driven by Spanish drummer Chus Gancedo, and "Sloth" displays carefully crafted neo-progressive textures thanks to Johan Chasseur's keyboards, reminiscent of Marillion or IQ. Mark Trueack’s (Unitopia) veteran vocals add a stellar classic symphonic touch, and guitarist Alen Brentini has definitely worked his socks off with the solos. Everything closes with the highly anticipated 18-minute final suite ("The Deadly Path") that, while not reaching the absolute masterpiece status of "A Change of Seasons", keeps you tightly glued to your seat.
In short: a solid album packed with instrumental strength and cinematic soundscapes. Highly recommended for fans of rich symphonic rock; stubborn purists should probably look away
Spanish.
